Most Venerable Luang Phor Thong Gleung of Wat Chedi Hoï

Luang Phor Thong Gleung Suntharo, also known by the monastic title of Phra Khru Sunthon Khunathada, is a revered Thai monk associated with the famous Wat Chedi Hoï, located in Lat Lum Kaeo, Pathum Thani Province. Born in 1938, he has become a respected spiritual figure for his role as founder, builder, and religious guide of this unique temple in Thailand.

Wat Chedi Hoï, literally the "temple of the pagoda with shells," owes its fame to its impressive constructions made from giant oyster fossils. These ancient shells, discovered underground during work on the site, are considered to be millions of years old. Luang Phor Thong Gleung had them used to build chedis, giving the temple its sacred and singular identity.

A building monk guided by a vision

According to local tradition, Luang Phor Thong Gleung had a spiritual vision revealing that the current location of Wat Chedi Hoï corresponded to an ancient city called Rattanawadi, linked to an extremely distant era. Guided by this mystical intuition, he reportedly went to the site before gradually establishing a hermitage there, then a real temple.

This visionary dimension holds an important place in the popular memory attached to the venerable. The temple's narrative thus blends geology, Buddhist faith, and spiritual perception of the territory. The oyster fossils, far from being mere natural curiosities, became under his impetus supports for contemplation on impermanence, deep time, and the power of accumulated merit.

Spiritual training and esoteric practices

Several Thai accounts report that Luang Phor Thong Gleung practiced ascetic wandering, or thudong, for years, particularly in Burma. There, he met a master named Phra Ajarn Silbanta, from whom he reportedly studied spiritual, ritual, and esoteric knowledge. These accounts contribute to his reputation as a monk skilled in alchemical practices, blessings, and spiritual support.
Among the Masters with whom Luang Phor Thong Gleung Suntharo studied were also the Most Venerable Luang Phor Seng of Wat Bang Na and the Most Venerable Luang Phor Uthama of Wat Wang Wiwekaram.

In the Thai tradition of great venerables, this type of journey is often associated with inner discipline, forest meditation, knowledge of khata, and mastery of protective blessings. Luang Phor Thong Gleung is thus perceived by many faithful as a monk of great metta, capable of calming difficulties, strengthening faith, and supporting people facing trials.

Wat Chedi Hoï, a place of faith and memory

The temple has become an original pilgrimage site, appreciated as much for its religious dimension as for its strange and ancient atmosphere. Visitors discover the chedis of fossil shells, Buddhist statues, ritual objects, as well as a local museum gathering many ancient and unusual objects donated to the temple over time.

Wat Chedi Hoï embodies the work of Luang Phor Thong Gleung: transforming a land marked by the vestiges of the past into a place of merit, prayer, and transmission. His actions have made this unique site known, where traces of ancient nature become supports for Buddhist faith.

Spiritual heritage

For devotees and collectors of Thai amulets, Luang Phor Thong Gleung remains associated with protection, spiritual healing, metta, and alchemical sacred objects. Amulets blessed by this venerable are sought after by practitioners who appreciate masters linked to the ascetic tradition, sacred visions, and historically rich places.

His heritage rests as much on the material construction of the temple as on the symbolic strength of his journey: that of a monk who united mystical vision, perseverance, and devotion to create a sanctuary deeply rooted in Thai spiritual memory.
