For centuries, travelers, chroniclers, and naturalists have described animals that they sometimes had never seen. Then, artists who had seen them even less tried to draw them.

The result is wonderful.

Elephants with dubious morphology, hippos vaguely resembling dogs, Ethiopian dragons, improbable sea creatures, and other zoological disasters populate ancient manuscripts and books.

The creations of the Bestiarium Inaccuratum are based on ancient illustrations and genuine historical curiosities. We restore them, recolor them, and give them a new career on t-shirts.

Including, whenever possible, the origin and true story of the illustration. Because it is even funnier to discover that a completely absurd animal was actually published in a scholarly work several centuries ago.
