Maitreya is a Bodhisattva often associated with the figure of the Buddha of the future.
He is also known as the "Coming Buddha" or "Future Buddha."
According to Buddhist tradition, Maitreya will be the fifth Buddha to appear
in this aeon, after Gautama Siddhartha (the historical Buddha) and his four successors. He is considered the Buddha who will bring new teachings to human beings when the original teachings of Gautama Siddhartha have lost their relevance. He is often depicted seated on a throne, sometimes surrounded by his disciples, and holding a golden staff.

He is revered by different Buddhist traditions, such as Mahayana Buddhism
and Tantric Buddhism. He is considered an important figure for Tantric Buddhist followers who practice the Maitreya tantras,
a system of practices that aims to enable a practitioner to become a Buddha in this very life. It is also venerated by Tibetans and Chinese,
who make offerings to him to obtain prosperity and security.

In China, belief in Maitreya is popular in Chan Buddhism and Pure Land Buddhism. Followers of these schools of thought believe that invoking his name with devotion can help facilitate their birth in the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha, a place of eternal bliss. He is often depicted
with a prominent belly, a symbol of his generosity and capacity
to nourish beings with his wisdom.
