Biography of the Venerable Lersi Sompit Nyanasophi

The Venerable Lersi Sompit Nyanasophi (1954-2021) was one of Thailand's great contemporary Lersi masters. Born in Lopburi province, he showed a deep interest in Dharma, meditation, and Thai esoteric sciences from a young age.

As a child, he became a Buddhist novice and then lived as a dek wat, a temple boy, helping the monks daily while receiving spiritual teachings. He studied with lay practitioners observing the eight precepts, then received teachings related to Putthamon, Saiyasat, incantations, astrology, divination, and ancient meditative practices.

At the age of twenty, Lersi Sompit took vows and was a monk for about fifteen years. During this period, he practiced the Thudong retreat, traveling through Thailand, Laos, Burma, and Cambodia to meet masters, meditate in isolated places, and deepen the spiritual traditions of the forest.

It was during a retreat that he met the Venerable Lersi Puth, a master living on a mountain in the Phetchabun region. This encounter marked a turning point in his life. At around thirty-five years old, Sompit chose to leave classic monastic life to follow the path of the Lersi, the sacred hermits of Thai tradition.

A Lersi Master between Meditation, Protection, and Sacred Rituals

Lersi Sompit was renowned for his blessings, his sak yant, his karmic purification ceremonies, his protective rituals, his spiritual advice, and the consecration of amulets. He also participated in major Thai ceremonies such as Waï Kru, Suat Pan Yak, and Puttha Phisek.

Although he did not live as a permanent hermit and was married, he maintained an active retreat practice and regularly visited his disciples, including abroad. His amulets are sought after for their connection to the Lersi tradition, protection, clairvoyance, inner strength, and the transmission of ancient Thai ritual knowledge.

Esoteric Anecdotes about Lersi Sompit

Lersi Sompit remained famous for his demonstrations of meditation in boiling oil during some Waï Kru ceremonies. According to traditional accounts, he could remain for a long time in a heated cauldron, surrounded by yant, medicinal herbs, lemongrass, and ritual oil, without suffering the effects normally expected from such exposure.

An anecdote passed down by his disciples recounts that his own master was able to place a living fish in boiling oil and then remove it unharmed. Lersi Sompit reportedly tried to replicate this feat, but the fish died instantly. He then humorously concluded that he must have eaten it, before simply adding: "My Master was truly very, very strong!"

Another tradition states that his master could stop a motor vehicle by the sheer power of his gaze. Lersi Sompit reportedly tried to imitate this power without success, thus reminding us that, even among masters, humility remains an essential part of the path.
