The Most Venerable Bhikkhunī Dr. Shi Kuang Seng (釋光勝)

The Most Venerable Bhikkhunī Dr. Shi Kuang Seng (civil name Varaporn Lertrangsi) is a Thai Buddhist nun of the Chinese Mahāyāna tradition, recognized for her commitment to spreading the Dharma and developing female Buddhism in Thailand.

In 1991, she went to the prestigious Puji Monastery, on Mount Putuo (普陀山) in China, a major pilgrimage site dedicated to the Bodhisattva Guanyin, to receive full bhikkhunī ordination according to the Chinese tradition. On this occasion, she received her monastic name Shi Kuang Seng (釋光勝).

Upon returning to Thailand, she took over the spiritual direction of the Guanyin Sanctuary of Chokchai 4 in Bangkok (Tamnak Phra Phothisat Guan Yin Maha Phothisat Awalokiteswa), where she became the main abbess. She also oversees several other affiliated Mahāyāna Buddhist centers, notably in Ram Inthra, Chiang Mai and Lamphun.

Throughout her monastic life, Venerable Shi Kuang Seng has dedicated herself to teaching the Dharma, meditation, and numerous charitable actions for women, children, and disadvantaged people. Her work has earned her several international awards, including the prestigious Outstanding Women in Buddhism Award, making her one of the most respected figures in contemporary Mahāyāna Buddhism in Thailand.

The faithful who frequent the Guanyin sanctuary of Chokchai 4 particularly appreciate her compassionate teaching, faithful to the ideal of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin), whose temple has perpetuated the tradition for over forty years.
