The Conan Test: When Amulet Descriptions Get More Muscular Than the Hero
There are amulets traditionally meant to protect their wearer, remind them of a teaching, or accompany them in their spiritual practice. There are also product descriptions that seem to have been written after three sleepless nights, two liters of coffee, a joint, and the complete collection of Conan the Barbarian.
Reading them, one question inevitably arises: are we still talking about a Buddhist amulet or a legendary artifact that allows one to conquer Cimmeria before lunch?
To find out, we developed a scientifically formidable simple method: the Conan Test.
The protocol is rigorous. We take a description inspired by actual product sheets found on certain specialized websites. We remove the name of the master or deity, then replace it with "Conan the Destroyer." If the description suddenly seems more natural than before, the test is positive.
Please note that the original descriptions have been slightly rephrased and anonymized. Our purpose is not to identify a particular shop, but to examine a very… enthusiastic way of selling Thai amulets.
First Test: The Amulet That Transforms You into an Army
Description Noted on a Specialized Website
This powerful amulet protects against black magic, entities, and all dangers. It can hypnotize enemies, create illusions, make its wearer appear to be accompanied by several people, and make them seem much larger and stronger.
Most protective objects modestly content themselves with protection. This one also provides an imaginary squad and alters your physique. It's more than an amulet: it's a complete special effects department.
Conan Version
This powerful amulet of Conan the Destroyer protects against sorcery, demons, and enemy warriors. It creates the illusion of an entire army around its wearer and makes them appear as an invincible giant.
Verdict
The replacement works perfectly. One can already imagine Conan advancing alone towards a fortress while his adversaries, convinced they see three hundred barbarians emerge, abandon the premises with remarkable speed.
Result: Conan 1 – Sobriety 0.
Second Test: The Spirit That Goes to Lunch Elsewhere
Description Noted on a Specialized Website
This amulet, containing a very powerful spirit, would free its owner from evil influences, demons, and negative karma. It would also act on love, seduction, finances, work, and luck. However, the spirit requires regular offerings. If its owner forgets them, it will go to feed elsewhere before returning when offerings resume.
This is reassuring. The entity does not get offended, curse anyone, or destroy the house: it simply goes to eat at the neighbors'. It is therefore less a vengeful spirit than a teenager with a spare set of keys.
Conan Version
Conan's spirit protects its master against curses, crushes their bad karma, and ensures wealth, seduction, and victory. It demands regular offerings of meat, mead, and black bread. If forgotten, it will go to feed in the neighboring village before returning to continue its mission.
Verdict
Again, nothing is shocking. The Conan version even seems almost more reasonable: when a spirit responsible for simultaneously ensuring your fortune, your career, your romantic life, and your protection against demons demands dinner, the least you can do is set a plate, right?
Please note that given its price of over 300 €, the spirit could still make the effort to prepare its own plate.
Result: Conan 2 – Sobriety 0.
Third Test: The Multi-Tasking Amulet
Description Noted on a Specialized Website
Thanks to powerful spells and incantations, this "multi-tasking" amulet would provide physical and occult protection, success in endeavors, prosperity, the removal of material and spiritual obstacles, the destruction of bad influences, and aid in meditation.
The phrase "multi-tasking" deserves recognition. We are no longer dealing with a religious object, but with a personal assistant equipped with a security service, a financial advisor, and an integrated meditation app.
Conan Version
Conan the Destroyer's multi-tasking amulet protects its wearer in battle, destroys curses, overcomes obstacles, ensures the clan's prosperity, promotes commercial conquests, and provides deep serenity after battle.
Verdict
Conan can therefore defeat an army in the morning, develop your business in the afternoon, and lead a guided meditation session in the evening. We were unaware that the famous barbarian possessed such skills in management and personal development.
Result: Conan 3 – Sobriety still 0.
Fourth Test: Total Protection and Social Advancement
Description Noted on a Specialized Website
The recitation of prayers associated with this amulet would offer total protection against all physical and occult dangers. It would also make its wearer popular and attractive, promote their social advancement and prestige, improve their karma, destiny, and astral chart, while providing them with new spiritual abilities.
"Total" protection was already an ambitious promise. But why stop there? Let's add popularity, seduction, a professional promotion, better karma, and a complete revision of the astral chart.
Conan Version
Conan's medallion offers total protection against blades, arrows, sorcerers, and occult creatures. It increases the warrior's prestige, improves their destiny, strengthens their power of seduction, and guarantees their ascent to the throne.
Verdict
We are clearly in the presence of the official amulet of the Cimmerian executive. It is as suitable for conquering a kingdom as for the annual performance review with human resources.
Result: Conan 4 – Sobriety missing.
Fifth Test: One-Night Player, Forever Spouse
Description Noted on a Specialized Website
This amulet would be particularly intended for gamblers and one-night seducers.
It brings luck, power of seduction, protection against dangers, professional success, and social advancement. It also strengthens the love of couples to the point of making it unbreakable.
The versatility is admirable. The object accompanies the one-night seducer while guaranteeing the eternal solidity of the couple. All that's missing is a function to discreetly erase message history.
Conan Version
Conan's amulet promotes games, conquests, success, and glory. It protects one-night stands, cures gonorrhea, and makes eternal unions absolutely unbreakable. Conan does not judge contradictions: Conan conquers them.
Verdict
This amulet clearly has several operating modes. However, it is recommended not to activate them simultaneously.
Result: Conan 5 – Marital Consistency 0.
The Supreme Amulet of Conan the Destroyer
After studying these descriptions, we can finally present the ultimate object they seemed to herald.
Sacred Amulet of Conan the Destroyer – Grand Model of Krom Phra Maha-Conan
Rare and exceptionally powerful, this amulet of potent power was consecrated for three moons in a secret forge, using magic metal, meteorite powder, vegan mammoth hair, and fragments of swords that belonged to Conan's defeated enemies.
It totally protects against visible, invisible, and administrative dangers. It deflects arrows, curses, tax audits, business rivals, and meetings that could have been replaced by an email.
Its wearer gains strength, charisma, popularity, professional success, prosperity, power of persuasion, and a decisive advantage in negotiations. Enemies can be hypnotized, repelled, or convinced that you are accompanied by an entire army.
The amulet also promotes seduction, strengthens couples, improves the astral chart, and allows one to crush adversaries, see them flee into the distance, and enjoy the general lamentations that follow their defeat.
To activate the amulet, place it before an offering of grilled meat and recite its khata three times:
By the power of Krom, may obstacles fall, may enemies clear away, and may prosperity enter my fortress.
If offerings are forgotten, Conan's spirit will go to feed elsewhere. It will return as soon as a suitable banquet is offered again.
Extremely rare piece. Probably the last available in this universe and in neighboring universes (20% discount if you buy three). Presented in a custom reliquary, resistant to battles, demons, and accidental falls into a mug of mead.
The Joke Stops Where the Law Begins
All of this is amusing as long as Conan remains in his movie and supernatural powers remain in a work of fiction. The situation changes when a professional attributes concrete results to a sold object that are likely to determine consumer purchase.
Presenting an amulet as a religious object traditionally associated with protection, luck, or spiritual practice falls under belief and cultural description. To assert as fact that it effectively protects against accidents, heals, enriches, hypnotizes others, guarantees success, or alters an enemy's behavior is an entirely different matter.
In France, a commercial practice can be considered misleading when it relies on false or misleading claims about a product's essential characteristics and the results that can be expected from its use. Unjustified healing promises are specifically regulated. More clearly, asserting that a product increases the chances of winning at gambling is among the practices that the Consumer Code deems misleading.
Adding "according to tradition" at the beginning of a description does not necessarily transform all subsequent promises into proven commercial truths. A tradition can be recounted with respect without promising the buyer invulnerability, wealth, the submission of women, and the jackpot in the next draw and subsequent ones too.
Thai amulets already possess a sufficiently rich history, iconography, rituals, materials, and cultural context. They do not need to be transformed into video game accessories accumulating fifteen legendary powers to merit interest.
Conan, meanwhile, can continue to crush his enemies, see them driven before him, and savor the lamentations accompanying their defeat. It's his job as a barbarian.
A French product description must simply remain a little more reasonable and respect the law.
I think it is more than time that certain sellers of Thai amulets stop taking their customers for "Con-ans."
