Jatukham Rammathep Amulet with Dharmachakra, Phra Rahu and Aṣṭa-Dikpāla – Numbered Piece 976
This remarkable Jatukham Rammathep amulet features particularly rich and unusual iconography. Made from a marbled sacred material with different nuances, it bears the individual number 976 and has a small metal pellet, probably silver, on the obverse.
On the obverse, Jatukham Rammathep is depicted sitting before the King of Nagas. This classic composition is here enriched with a much more unusual detail: Jatukham holds in one of his hands a Dharmachakra, the Wheel of Dharma, symbol of Buddhist teaching and the setting in motion of the Dharma.
This representation thus combines the protective power traditionally attributed to Jatukham Rammathep with a particularly strong Buddhist symbolism.
The reverse side features a complex cosmological composition dominated in its center by Phra Rahu. Around him appear eight armed figures arranged in a circle and associated with different sacred animals or mounts.
This arrangement corresponds to the Aṣṭa-Dikpāla, the eight guardians of the directions from Indian cosmology and present in various forms in the religious traditions of Southeast Asia. These protective powers symbolically watch over the eight directions of space.
Several animals or vāhanas are visible around these figures, including forms evoking the elephant, various bovines, the horse, and several powerful animals.
