Ancient Nine-Pronged Tibetan Dorje in Bronze and Iron

Ancient nine-pronged Tibetan dorje, dating from the early 20th century, or even slightly earlier. This ritual object is made of dark bronze and has the remarkable particularity of featuring a central iron rod.

The dorje, or vajra, is one of the main ritual instruments in Tantric Buddhism. It notably symbolizes the indestructible nature of Enlightenment and is traditionally used in many Vajrayāna practices and ceremonies.

The nine-pronged configuration holds particular significance. It is notably associated with the Nyingma tradition and symbolizes the nine vehicles of the Buddhist path, representing the progression and accomplishment of the different levels of the spiritual path.

In some Tantric traditions, the nine-pronged dorje also appears in practices related to Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava and Vajrakīlaya. Teachings associate the nine prongs with the mastery of the nine vehicles, while other transmissions attribute particular meanings to them related to Tantric and Dzogchen practices.

The presence of a central iron rod within a bronze body is particularly interesting. This composite construction is attested in ancient Tibetan vajras. Iron also holds a special place in certain Tibetan ritual traditions: texts notably describe nine-pronged vajras made or visualized in iron, sometimes in meteoric iron, called "sky iron."

The center of the dorje is wrapped in an ancient dark red fabric showing significant patina and signs of wear. This element has been preserved as is and contributes to the ritual and historical character of this ancient piece.
