Antique Forged Carpenter's Doloire – First Half of the 19th Century
Superb antique wrought iron carpenter's doloire, probably made during the first half of the 19th century.
This imposing traditional tool was intended for woodworking, particularly for squaring and dressing timber for framing. Its wide blade allowed the carpenter to gradually remove material to achieve a smooth surface, while its particular shape provided ample clearance for the hand during work. This tool was made for a right-handed carpenter.
This doloire features a remarkable antique construction with a long metal sleeve wrapping around a large part of the handle. The forge work remains perfectly visible on the iron, with its irregularities and characteristic traces of manufacture.
Despite its estimated age of nearly two centuries, this tool is in a very fine state of preservation. The iron is sound and its 14 cm cutting edge is still very sharp. The antique handle is still present and the whole remains functional.
A very beautiful authentic piece, both a witness to traditional carpentry techniques and a remarkable collector's item for enthusiasts of antique tools.
