Ancient Prai Bone Belt Buckle – Atypical Paneng
A very unusual ancient Thai object, handcrafted from animal bone, probably water buffalo. This impressive piece depicts a skull surmounting two crossed bones, iconography particularly evocative of the world of Thai occult practices related to spirits and the Prai world.
Measuring approximately 8.5 cm in length, the object has a large rectangular loop of about 3.5 cm, dimensions perfectly compatible with a belt. Its design thus very likely identifies it as an ancient belt buckle or an ornament worn at the waist.
This piece can be compared to Paneng (ปั้นเหน่ง), ancient belt buckles, some variants of which belong to the world of Thai talismanic objects. There are Paneng especially associated with the Sai Prai occult traditions. However, this particular example remains atypical due to its material, its simplicity, and its macabre iconography.
The object has no engraving, inscription, or inlay. All its symbolism rests on its shape: a skull with deeply carved eye sockets and two crossed bones. Its artisanal and ancient appearance, estimated to be about fifty years old, clearly evokes a personal ritual object that belonged to an Ajarn.
The identity of its former owner, its eventual consecration, and its precise ritual use are not known. I believe it may have belonged to an Ajarn or a practitioner who appreciated objects related to the Prai universe.
