Exceptional old Thai Phra Somdej statue made of terracotta, from the famous Wat Rakhang.

This unique object was part of Wat Rakhang until the early 1990s, before being removed from the temple during renovation work.

The statue depicts Buddha seated in the characteristic iconography of Phra Somdej. Its slender form, ending in a high point, as well as its deliberately simple modeling give it the appearance of ancient Thai votive representations.

The surface shows a significant natural patina and numerous signs of wear testifying to its age and long presence in the temple.

The upper part is particularly worn. This wear is explained by the very large number of devotees who, for years, touched this statue to receive its blessings. This mark gradually left by the hands of practitioners is one of the most moving aspects of this ancient temple piece.

It is therefore not simply an ancient representation of Buddha, but a true object that participated for decades in the spiritual life of Wat Rakhang.
