Chinese Guan Yin Amulet
This rare amulet depicts Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara), the bodhisattva of compassion revered throughout the Asian Buddhist world. The deity is depicted seated in meditation, crowned and adorned with ornaments, a symbol of his awakened and compassionate nature.
The reverse of the amulet bears an engraving in Chinese characters corresponding to the sacred mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" , the universal invocation of infinite compassion. This formula, very popular in Chinese and Tibetan traditions, is believed to purify negative karma and open the heart of the one who recites it.
Although its temple of origin is unknown, this piece clearly falls within the Sino-Buddhist tradition where Guan Yin is invoked as protector, healer and liberator from suffering.
