🙏🏽 Biography of the Most Venerable Luang Phor Wiriyan 🙏🏽

The Most Venerable Luang Phor Wiriyan, also known as Luang Phor Viriyang Sirintharo, or by his honorary title Somdet Phra Ñāṇavajirottama สมเด็จพระญาณวชิโรดม, was one of the great Thai meditation masters of the 20th century. Born on January 7, 1920, in Saraburi and passed away on December 22, 2020, in Bangkok, he was a major figure in the Theravāda tradition, of the forest master lineage, and of Wat Thamma Mongkhön, also known as Wat Dhammamongkol, in Bangkok.

A disciple of Phra Ajarn Gong Ma and Luang Pu Mun Bhuridatta, Luang Phor Wiriyan received profound training in the practice of meditation, dhutanga asceticism, and monastic discipline. From his youth, he was marked by a spontaneous meditative experience that transformed his life. From that moment, he dedicated his existence to the path of Dharma, to the teaching of mental concentration, and to the dissemination of meditation accessible to all.

Ordained as a monk in 1941, he spent several years practicing in the forests and remote areas of Thailand. He then studied under Luang Pu Mun, one of the greatest masters of the Thai forest tradition. With his master's permission, he helped transmit his teachings, particularly through the compilation known as Mutthothai.

Later settling in Bangkok, Luang Phor Wiriyan founded Wat Thamma Mongkhön, which became an important center for meditation and Buddhist practice. The temple is famous for its large stupa, its retreat spaces, its teachings, and its immense jade Buddha statue, made from a block of jade discovered in Canada. This statue has become one of the spiritual symbols of the temple.

Luang Phor Wiriyan also founded the Willpower Institute, dedicated to teaching meditation to people of all religions and backgrounds. His objective was simple yet immense: to reduce human conflict through inner discipline, mental peace, and the development of willpower.

📿 Spiritual Anecdotes 📿

Tradition has it that at the age of thirteen, while accompanying a friend to Wat Pa Sawang Arom temple, young Viriyang had a sudden meditative experience. His mind reportedly calmed in an entirely unexpected way, giving him such profound inner joy that he understood the strength of Buddhism was still alive.

Another famous anecdote concerns his recovery from a serious illness in his youth. After vowing to dedicate his life to the Dhamma if he regained his health, he was reportedly helped by a white-clad ascetic. This episode definitively strengthened his spiritual vocation.

Quote

“The true value of a Buddha image is to remind us of the Buddha’s teachings.”

This phrase, attributed to Luang Phor Wiriyan regarding the jade Buddha of Wat Thamma Mongkhön, aptly summarizes his teaching: sacred objects are not just meant to be admired, but to bring the mind back to wisdom, meditation, and the practice of Dhamma.

Luang Phor Wiriyan remains today a great figure of modern Thai meditation. His legacy continues through Wat Thamma Mongkhön, the meditation centers he founded in Thailand and abroad, and the many disciples who continue to transmit his teachings.
