of Wat Barn Nong Djik (Sri Saket).

Biography of Luang Pu Saen Pasanno of Wat Ban Nong Djik, Sri Saket

Luang Pu Saen Pasanno, also known as Luang Phor Saen of Wat Ban Nong Djik, was one of the great spiritual masters of southern Isan. Born in 1907 in Sri Saket province, he is remembered by devotees as a monk of exceptional longevity, great simplicity, and profound compassion.

His civilian name was Saen Khumkhrong. From childhood, he lived in temple environments, particularly Wat Ban Phong, where his brother was abbot. He received traditional religious training, studying texts, the Khom language, liturgical Pali, and ancient practices with renowned masters, including Luang Phor Mum of Wat Prasat Yeu Tai.

A Master of the Esoteric Tradition of Isan

Ordained at the age of 21, LP Saen continued his study of meditation, protective prayers, and ancient ritual knowledge. At 24, he temporarily left monastic life to help his modest rural family. Even as a layman, he remained known as mor tham, a traditional esoteric practitioner responsible for praying, healing, protecting, and guiding villagers.

According to accounts passed down in the region, he also traveled to Cambodia, particularly to Battambang, Siem Reap, and Sisophon, to deepen certain ancient knowledge. He reportedly always favored practices aimed at helping the sick, alleviating suffering, and protecting devotees, rather than aggressive or spectacular uses.

Return to Monastic Life

After fulfilling his family duties, Luang Phor Saen returned to the saffron robe at a very advanced age. He resumed monastic life around 90, led a simple existence, and then participated in the development of several temples. At 97, he returned to Wat Ban Nong Djik, in Sri Saket province, where he remained until the end of his life.

Despite his age, many devotees came to receive his blessings. His amulets, medals, and sacred objects have become highly sought after in Thailand, particularly for protection, luck, safety, and prosperity.

Esoteric Anecdotes

Local tradition reports that LP Saen was particularly renowned for protective blessings, called metta maha niyom and klaew klad, intended to attract benevolence and ward off dangers. Many devotees claimed to wear his amulets during travels, dangerous work, or difficult periods.

Another anecdote tells that, even at a very old age, he maintained an astonishingly peaceful presence. Visitors reported feeling a deeply calm atmosphere around him, as if his simple blessing was enough to soothe worries.
I personally witnessed this when I visited the Venerable two months before his passing, when he was hospitalized (I did not dare ask for a photo out of respect).

Quote attributed to his teaching

“The true power of a blessing comes from a pure mind, righteous conduct, and a compassionate heart.”

This saying summarizes the spirit generally associated with the Most Venerable Luang Phor Saen: a spiritual practice centered on compassion, inner discipline, and practical help for devotees.

Death and Spiritual Legacy

LP Saen passed away peacefully on July 25, 2019, at Wat Ban Nong Djik, at the age of 112. He is still honored today as one of the great elders of Sri Saket and as an important master of the popular Buddhist tradition of Isan.

For collectors, Luang Phor Saen's amulets represent not only objects of devotion but also the memory of a rare master, linked to ancient traditions of protection, healing, and blessing.
