Most Venerable Luang Phor Koon Parisuttho

Luang Phor Koon Parisuttho, also known as Luang Por Khun, was one of the most respected Thai Buddhist masters of the 20th century. Born on October 4, 1923, in the Ban Rai region, Dan Khun Thot district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, he remains associated with the famous Wat Ban Rai, a temple that has become a popular place of devotion in Thailand.

Born into a humble farming family, he received a traditional religious education at a very young age, including the study of Thai script, Khmer script, protective prayers, and esoteric knowledge specific to the ancient masters of Isan. This early training profoundly shaped his spiritual path and his relationship with the faithful.

He was ordained as a monk on May 5, 1944, at Wat Thanon Hak Yai, receiving the monastic name Parisuttho. He studied under several renowned masters, notably Luang Phor Daeng and Luang Phor Khong Phuttasaro, who initiated him into meditation, strict monastic discipline, and the practices of thudong, long ascetic treks through forests and remote regions.

After his years of itinerant practice, Luang Phor Koon returned to Wat Ban Rai, where he dedicated his life to the development of the temple, the teaching of the Dhamma, and helping local communities. His reputation quickly spread beyond Nakhon Ratchasima province. He was admired for his frankness, direct humor, simplicity, and great generosity.

Thai devotees revered him not only as a highly disciplined monk but also as a protective master. His blessings, amulets, medals, and sacred objects are particularly sought after by collectors and practitioners, as they are associated with protection, luck, merit, moral strength, and prosperity.

Luang Phor Koon was also famous for his many charitable actions. Donations received at the temple were often used to support schools, hospitals, public infrastructure, and projects beneficial to rural communities. This generosity contributed to making him a national figure of modern Thai Buddhism.

He received several honorary ecclesiastical titles during his life, including that of Phra Thep Witthayakhom. Despite this official recognition, he maintained the image of a simple monk, close to the people, faithful to the direct and popular spirit of the Buddhist tradition of Isan.

The Most Venerable Luang Phor Koon Parisuttho passed away on May 16, 2015, in Nakhon Ratchasima, at the age of 91. In accordance with his wishes, his body was donated to the Faculty of Medicine of Khon Kaen University, a final act of generosity that perfectly illustrates the spirit of giving and compassion that marked his entire existence.

Even today, the name of Luang Phor Koon of Wat Ban Rai remains deeply respected in Thailand. His amulets and blessed objects continue to be worn as symbols of faith, protection, and remembrance of a master whose life was entirely dedicated to merit, helping others, and practicing the Dhamma.
