Kruba Srivichai – The Saint of Lanna
The Most Venerable Kruba Srivichai (also written Khruba Siwichaiครูบาศรีวิชัย1878-1939) is considered one of the greatest spiritual masters of Northern Thai Buddhism. Born in the village of Ban Pang, in Lamphun province, he became a monk at a very young age and quickly became known for his discipline, compassion, and total dedication to spreading the Dharma.
Revered by the inhabitants of the ancient historical kingdom of Lanna, Kruba Srivichai played a major role in the revival of regional Buddhism in the early 20th century. He oversaw the restoration and construction of numerous temples, bridges, and religious infrastructure, earning him the nickname "the builder monk."
Among his most famous achievements is the construction of the road leading to the sacred temple of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, near Chiang Mai, completed in 1935 through the mobilization of thousands of devotees. This road allowed pilgrims easier access to one of the most sacred sanctuaries of Thai Buddhism.
Despite several conflicts with the centralized religious administration of Siam, related to his independence in ordaining monks and organizing religious projects, Kruba Srivichai remained deeply respected by the people. His humility and unwavering faith further strengthened his spiritual aura.
Even today, he is honored as the "Saint of Lanna." Statues, shrines, and monuments are dedicated to him throughout the Chiang Mai and Lamphun regions, where devotees continue to pay homage and remember his immense contribution to Thai Buddhism.
