Atisha also called Atisha Dipankara Shrigyana (982 - 1054)
was a famous monk, Buddhist scholar and meditation master.
His traditional biography is reminiscent of that of Buddha Shakyamuni.
He was the son of King Kalyana the Good and Queen Prabhavati the Radiant and had 2 brothers.
History has it that at 18 months old, during his first public audience in the temple of Kamalapuri, he spontaneously prostrated himself before the statue of the Buddha while reciting prayers. Then, upon leaving the temple, he greeted his father's subjects, renounced secular life, and asked to wear religious clothes .
At the age of 3, he would have become, among other things, an expert in astrology.
As a young man, Atisha aspired to the life of a mendicant monk, but his parents
wanted to keep him as the family heir.
The day before her wedding (at age 11), the protective Tara is said to have revealed to her
his destiny as a mendicant monk. He nevertheless accepts his marriage
but does not renounce his spiritual practice.
He was the Superior of the great Vikramashila Monastery at a time when Buddhism was flourishing in India. He was later invited to Tibet, and his visit greatly contributed to the reestablishment of Buddhism in that country. There he wrote the first text on the stages of the path, The Lamp for the Path of Awakening (Sanskrit: Bodhipathapradipa ).
His main Tibetan disciple Dromtönpa propagated his main teaching
(the Lamrim ) and was the founder of the Kadampa lineage.

This " talisman of the Stupa of Atisha " is taken from his writings
and is known to be a powerful amulet,
able to purify Karma by simple contact.
*
It is therefore possible not only to wear this amulet,
but also to benefit beings (human or animal)
by simply applying it briefly to their head.
