Thai tradition says that the statue of Buddha Luang Phor Khao Takhrao
is one of the three main Buddha images; the other two are Luang Phor Sothorn in Chachoengsao Province and Luang Phor Ban Laem in Samut Songkhram Province. The history of the Luang Phor Khao Takhrao statue dates back to the end of the Ayutthaya period, when the people of Ban Laem, who were the ancestors of today's Samut Songkhram residents, escaped Burmese troops and settled at the mouth of the Mekong River. One day, the fishermen of Ban Laem went fishing and were surprised to find two Buddha images in their nets: one was standing, carrying an alms bowl, and the other was in the submissive posture of Mara. The people of Ban Laem brought the standing Buddha to be enshrined at Wat Ban Laem in the center of Samut Songkhram. The temple is now known as Wat Petch Samut Viharn. The second Buddha statue was given to the people of Bang Ta Boon who brought the image to Wat Khao Takhrao in Ban Laem district, Petchaburi province.
In addition, Wat Khao Takhrao also houses other famous Buddha images, such as Wat Luang Phor Thong Buddha, Wat Luang Phor Dhevarit Buddha, and a replica of Wat Ban Laem Luang Phor Thong Buddha. Luang Por Dhevarit is an ancient Buddha image that has always been in the Ubosot of this temple. Luang Phor Thong Buddha was previously located in the sanctuary on the mountain and was later considered the second main Buddha image, after Luang Phor Dhevarit. There is also a replica of Luang Phor Thong Buddha in this temple.
