Ancient Phra Huyan amulet made of lead alloy from Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat (Lopburi)
An ancient amulet depicting Phra Huyan (พระหูยาน) from the famous Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat temple in Lopburi. This type of amulet was discovered in large numbers during the extensive restoration work at the site, carried out between 1897 and 1965. Some were found in large baskets in a crypt dating back to the 14th century, which suggests their maximum age is around 700 years.
The amulet offered to you here is made of an old lead alloy, very blackened by time, and has been set in a copper ring with notched patterns, typical of ancient settings made to protect these sacred objects.
The image of Phra Huyan (the Buddha seated in the lotus position performing the earth witness mudra) is here stylized according to Lopburi art, influenced by the Khmer style, with an expressive face and a massive body in a meditation posture. This type of amulet was revered for its virtues of protection against physical dangers, enemies, and occult forces.
