Tibetan Sangye Menla Melong Medal Amulet
(Magic Mirror of Medicine Buddha).
*
This very beautiful health amulet of the Medicine Buddha was consecrated
at the Huazang Temple (China) and I obtained it through
from the Institute of Medicine and Astrology of His Holiness the Dalai Lama .
*
of the Medicine Buddha Sangye Menla (in Sanskrit: Bhaishajyaguru ).
*
Bhaishajyaguru means "The Supreme Healer", he is depicted here
in its classic blue form which is also named
"The Lord of Lapis Lazuli" (in ancient Tibetan medicine
This stone is one of the most powerful remedies).
*
According to tradition, the Buddha manifested in the form of Sangye Menla thousands of years ago and dictated the texts of Tibetan medicine known as
"The 4 Tantras of Secret Instructions on the 8 Branches of the Essence of Immortality" also more commonly called Gyushi or "The 4 Tantras of Medicine".
*
The Master of Remedies carries in his right hand a sprig of the medicinal plant Arura (Myrobalan, or Terminalia Chebula) which is one of the main components of traditional Tibetan medicines.
His right hand is facing upwards, symbolizing that he is offering
its benefits and remedies generously.
His left hand is in Dhyana mudra and carries an alms bowl
which contains the three nectars:
- The nectar that cures diseases and restores life to the dead.
- The nectar of eternal youth.
- The nectar that illuminates the mind and increases knowledge
(this last "Nectar" is a clear reminder of shamanic practices including
hallucinogens dating back to before Buddhism).
*
This magic mirror of the Medicine Buddha is
a very beautiful modern version of a health amulet from the Tibetan tradition.
*
It was consecrated during a series of 9 Puja ceremonies
of the Medicine Buddha Sangye Menla
and will bring good health and long life to its wearer.
